Our history

THE TERČIČ FAMILY

Our family history is linked indelibly to San Floriano del Collio - Števerjan, a place we have called home for numerous generations. Documents attesting to the presence of Terčič in the village date back at least 300 years.
In the early part of the 20th century, my grandfather Alojz, following local family traditions, laid the foundations of the farm with the acquisition of the first plots of land.
The onset of the First World War abruptly interrupted viticulture in the village. For two long years, between 1915 and 1917, the battle lines crossed San Floriano del Collio, leaving devastation behind it. When the families of the village were finally able to return to their homes at the end of the war, they found them reduced to ruins. Among these was the Tercic family's farmhouse, which was located where we still own a vineyard called Vrt. Faced with such desolation, my grandfather's family made the decision move to the nearby hamlet of Bucuie - Bukovje, where we still live today.
In 1924, Alojz's first son, my father Zdenko Terčič, was born. As adulthood approached, he found himself caught up in the events of the Second World War, which forced him to leave the family farm. Returning at the end of this difficult period, between the 1950s and 1980s, Zdenko began purchasing land in the area and planting it to vine. It was in these years that he met Elizabeta, my mother, with whom he built our family. My parents ran the farm together, selling milk and dairy products, alongside their main occupation which was selling grapes and other local produce. They also made a modest amount of wine for their own family consumption.
During the formative years of study and personal research, during which my family conveyed to me the importance of developing an intimate bond with the vineyards, I began to cultivate the idea of dedicating our property to specialized wine production. In 1993 I was able to realize the desire to express the passion that had been growing within me with the production of the first 2000 bottles of Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio.
Over the next three years the production increased from 4000 to 7000 bottles, and in 1998, we introduced the first single vineyard selection, Planta, a Chardonnay that I care deeply about, followed in 2003 by Seme a Merlot produced exclusively in years with optimal ripening, to date 2008, 2011 and 2018.
During the early years, the cellar was located in a converted stable at our home, however with the increase in production, it soon proved insufficient for our needs and in 2004 we began the construction of a new cellar, where we made the first vintage the year after.
In 2008, two new vineyard selections were introduced, the Pinot Grigio Dar and Sauvignon Scemen.
In 2020, immediately after completing her oenology degree, my daughter Ana joined the winery, and today she supports me in the vineyard and the cellar. In 2023, we celebrated our company's 30th anniversary.
